Adapting Subtitle Templates: A Practical Exercise in Audiovisual Translation
As part of a practical exercise in audiovisual subtitling, I worked on the translation and adaptation of subtitle templates for a pre-existing series. This task involved receiving pre-timed subtitle files, where my primary responsibility was to adjust the translated content to fit the time constraints while maintaining fidelity to the original text and adhering to professional subtitling norms.
The project was designed with a pedagogical focus, emphasizing the development of key competencies in professional subtitling. These skills included working within strict time constraints, tailoring text to meet viewers' reading speed requirements, and ensuring linguistic and cultural coherence in the subtitles. I also gained valuable experience working with .txt files, learning to manage essential codes to ensure compatibility with professional subtitling systems.
Using tools such as Aegisub, I was able to edit and adapt the subtitles effectively, practicing synchronization and observing how text interacts with audiovisual narratives. This hands-on experience allowed me to develop technical skills while reinforcing the importance of creating accessible and viewer-friendly content.
